he likes soup, or so he says

well many of you know the battle that is waged in the gotch household almost every day . . . jen vs. andrew in THE BATTLE OF SOUP (dah dah dah daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah). it has been a losing battle on my end for about 4 years running. you know how he has his list of foods he hates (wet meat, pulpy juice, cherries, pickles, and on and on)? well soup always seems to find it's way to the top of the list. this is a problem for me, since i am a soup lover. i love to eat soup, i love to make soup and when i feel that first bit of cold in the autumn air (which in l.a. means when it drops below 70 degrees), i want soup. and yesterday, for some odd reason, he agreed to a pot of soup. i think it is mostly because i told him it had peanut butter in it, and peanut butter is at the top of his "foods i love" list right after hamburgers. so after a short trip to the market, some chopping of vegetables, and warming of bread, soup was served. and it was good, real, real good. andrew ate every last drop, only quizzing me a few times about the ingredients. i was reluctant to tell him there was salsa in it, because he doesn't like cooked tomatoes or tomato soup. it didn't seem to phase him. he even ate the garbanzo beans, and he hates beans, except green beans. later that night, when the truth was rising to the surface, he confided in me that next time, he could do without the beans. i reminded him that he loves humus, but that was not enough. "it's a texture thing, not a taste thing" he calmly replied. either way, i feel like some progress was made here last night. there is even talk of more soup next week. i'll keep you posted. here's the recipe if you are interested.

Oh, that is so funny. Interesting soup idea. I try to make Friday morning soup each week - with the leftover vegetables from my week's vegetable box (which I have inevitably not eaten.) Glad to see you haven't forgotten the food blog!

I hardly ever check in here anymore and the day I do you have a new post :)

I can relate with him... I remember when I was young and would walk in the door to be greeted with the smell of soup cooking. My reaction was always a heartfelt noooooooooo!!!! please, mom, I don't like soup!!!! Now I'm in charge of my own dinners :) Peanut butter tops my list too, maybe I'll give this one a try...

Awesome post! The way you describe his likes/dislikes is hilarious. Quite a character! :)

Here is a recipe for another soup with peanut butter that you might try -- it's from Moosewood's Simple Suppers and it's super simple and delicious!

sounds like a great soup - i torture my andrew with too many meals from a bowl too often in the winter and hope he doesn't grow sick of soups and stews!

that cracks me up. we have the soup battle in our house, too! i LOVE soup. he HATES it (and pickles! maybe it's a boy thing?). i've even stooped so low as to "accidently" make soup (as in, shoot! wasn't supposed to be so soupy...don't know what happened?). might try again with this...thanks and good luck!

So, a bit of a request-

As you run out of polaroid film, it would be awesome for you to discuss what the translation to digital means to you. You have a really good photographic style and it would be cool to see what tricks you employ to keep your style upon moving away from Polaroid.

Just a thought! Keep up the great work- I like it here and I'm glad you're back on the horse.

I have the exact same constant battle brewing with my BF too. I though it was so strange, to dismiss soup as a whole-- all the culinary tradition, the complex flavors developed, the simple homey goodness-- all out the window with "I don't like soup".

I started with Stews and Chili and, that went alright. I moved on to thick soups, like pureed sweet potato, or tortilla soup (thickened with masa harina). Now he doesn't hate all soups, but a brothy chicken noodle or wanton soup gets all the bits picked out, leaving a sad bowl of cold broth.

He hates cherries? Freak. (sorry, but that is weird).

My Monster hates soup too, with a full-on temper tantrum passion. I just don't bother.

Glad to see you back.
